Get Organized Month

If your New Year’s resolution is to get organized in 2008, then January's Get Organized Month, sponsored by the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO), can help you get started! "January is the perfect month to get organized and start your new year off right,” says NAPO President Standolyn Robertson. “Getting organized is one of the top 5 New Year’s resolutions people make”.

Why get organized?

  • Bring order, calm, and control to home and family life.
  • Save money by organizing bills, shopping, and clothing.
  • Get more done in less time.
  • Find what you need—and need what you find!
  • Find real solutions to the everyday or ongoing challenges of too much to do, changing priorities, and information overload.

YOUR OFFICE

Getting Things Done

Want to find out how you can make your calendar work for you? In David Allen's book called "Getting Things Done", he talks about the point of having a calendar or planning system. The whole idea is to get it out of your brain so you don't have to think about it. The purpose of a calendar is to remind you of your tasks and appointments so that when you get distracted you have a system in place to help you re-focus.  Then you can be much more relaxed because you don't have to remember everything!

Here are some tips to help make your calendar work for you:

  • At the beginning of your week, create a top five list of things you want to accomplish that week.
  • At the end of each day, create a top five list for the next day.
  • Do a twice-daily calendar review.  Look at it first thing in the morning and then again in the evening (to be prepared for the next day).

YOUR LIFE

Less is More!

Knowing what you want out of life is the single most important thing you can do.  Make room for the new you:

  • Get rid of the junk in your life both physical and mental that doesn't fit you anymore.
  • Take things out of your schedule that are taking your time away from finding out what you want to do.

By making room for the new you, you will create a vacuum that the new you will rush in to fill and you will be on your way to the top! - Edward W. Smith, Sixty Seconds To Success

"Everything that is on your countertop or desk right now most likely represents decisions that have not been made. Clutter results from putting off decisions for later. Your ability to get and stay organized is directly related to your ability to make decisions!~ David Allen
