Put a Shine on It!
When a friend of mine was taking care of her mom, who was in the hospital after suffering a stroke, she got a chuckle out of how, even when her mom was not feeling well, she still managed to put a shine on the sink in the bathroom. It was a habit to wash her hands then use the paper towel to wipe up any water spots around the sink and shine the faucet.
These little habits are things we do without even thinking, so even if our home (or life) is in chaos, they still get done.
My grandmother had a habit of never leaving dirty dishes in the sink before going to bed. Even if it was only a glass or a spoon, she would wash and put it away. That way, when she woke up in the morning, her kitchen was clean and she could start the day off fresh.
Consistent daily action is at the root of getting and staying organized. Establishing little habits that string together into simple routines can help your day run on automatic pilot. Start by creating at least one new habit that will put a shine on your day and see how quickly it becomes automatic for you!

Ergonomics
After listening to Paul Dournovo, a Registered Massage Therapist, speak about back pain and injuries at a recent networking meeting, I was reminded about the importance of having an ergonomic work environment. For most of us, ergonomics is familiar term but very few of us actually know what this really means or how to position ourselves when we work. Here are a few tips to consider when assessing your computer workstation:
-
Use an adjustable chair with a dynamic chair back
-
Center the computer monitor and keyboard in front of you
-
Sit at arms length from the monitor
-
Wrists flat and straight in relation to forearms when using your keyboard and mouse
-
Arms and elbows relaxed close to body
- Feet are flat on the floor or a stable footrest
Use a negative tilt keyboard tray with an upper mouse platform or downward tiltable platform adjacent to keyboard
Use a stable work surface and stable (no bounce) keyboard tray
Take frequent short breaks (microbreaks)
I also did some research on office chairs and came across a great article that I wanted to share. It is called Whats Wrong with the Chair - Sitting and the New Ergonomics by Patrick Clark. Enjoy!
