Thoughtful Giving

Christmas is a time for giving. It makes us feel good to give a gift that we know will be appreciated, but so often gifts are given out of a sense of obligation rather than need. Then, once the excitement of Christmas is over, those gifts become part of the After Christmas Clutter.

Here are some thoughtful gift giving tips to help keep your clutter under control this Christmas:

  • Use the One-In, One-Out Rule. This means when you buy or receive something new, eliminate one thing you no longer use. Give it to someone who could really use it. There are plenty of charities to donate to at Christmas so not only are you eliminating clutter, you are also helping others in need.
  • Give a Consumable Gift. Consumable gifts are anything that can be used, eaten, sent, read, or enjoyed by the recipient instead of stashed in a closet for the next yard sale. A consumable gift is the gift of an experience or activity, not a thing, a keepsake, or another piece of clutter. Consumable gifts help to fight clutter, save money, and bring the holiday spirit back home.

OFFICE

Organize Your Paper

Paper may very well be the largest organizational challenge for people today. Why? Every single day we are inundated with an ever-increasing influx of printed material, as well as a variety of other information that will eventually be printed. Email, snail mail, coupons, flyers, invoices, bills, envelope stuffers, magazines… the list goes on and on.

There are a number of simple strategies that can be used to minimize your piles of paper:

  • Always, always, always open your mail over a garbage can or recycling bin. Immediately throw out the stuffers, envelope, and any other contents that do not require action.
  • Employ the philosophy DO IT NOW!
  • Ask yourself what would happen if you threw out any given piece of paper. If the answer is nothing, then it’s out the door. If you think that you might need it again someday, would you be able to get a duplicate copy? If the answer is yes, it goes too.
  • Read mail with a highlighter in hand, and mark any actions required - due dates on bills along with the balance due.
  • Any invitations, appointments, etc. enter directly into your agenda on the date they happen, along with the time, address of the location, and contact phone number.

The more paper you can eliminate before it gets added to the pile, the better!
