To Store or Not to Store?

Did you know that the self storage industry is only about 35 years old?  I recently read that it took 25 years for the first billion square feet of storage space to be built. The second billion square feet was built in just 8 years!

Self storage has become a popular alternative to getting rid of stuff and, according to the Self Storage Association, 1 in 11 households now rent extra storage space!

If you are one of those people renting extra storage space, think about how many times you have actually needed to find something that was stored there? Were you able to find it when you needed it?  Most of the time, the items in storage are just extra stuff or sentimental items you hang on to just in case you might need them someday.

I recently received an article about Barbara Streisand who was decluttering and donating items from her Beverly Hills, Malibu and New York homes because she was through with extra stuff.  Her theory is:

What good does it do in storage? Let someone else enjoy it. These things, they are not forever. We pass them on and reap the benefits for something important, she said. I'm a collector, so one collects and collects and collects. But now I have enough stuff, so it's a good time to clean the closets.

Storage is a temporary way to deal with extra stuff, but it can be costly. Instead, keep only what you use or love and let someone else enjoy the rest!

OFFICE

The Eco-Concious Office

Are you ready to move from eco-curious (just thinking about green options) to eco-conscious (practicing green habits)?

I recently attended a presentation by Lindsay Eason of Green Step. Her role is to help businesses look for options that will reduce their impact on the environment and create sustainable solutions for the future.

Reducing the amount of things you use and thinking about the social and environmental impact of your purchases is a good place to start, but what else can you do?  Here are a few ideas that will get you moving in the right direction:

  • Limit the nature and volume of the products you consume and discard.
  • Set up effective and efficient recycling centers in your office.
  • Find creative ways to store or re-use useful items instead of throwing them away.
  • Purchase earth-friendly, second-hand, or locally-produced products where feasible.
  • Follow Green disposal practices such as recycling and safely disposing of toxic items.

Once you have a better understanding of your own impact on the environment, it is easy to see how these seemingly small changes really can make a big difference.

Alan Phillips Clinical Counsellor of Confidential Counselling and Consulting Services brings us this Stress Tip of the Month on Exercising to Reduce Stress:
Did you know that exercise reduces stress levels? Our bodies require motion to break down waste-products and reduce stress hormones released in the body. When we become stressed and we are not active, they tend to remain in our bloodstream for quite awhile, making us feel jumpy, irritable and stressed. When we get moving, the hormones have done their work and our body returns to normal. As regular exercise combats stress, strengthens your body, improves your sleep, enhances your circulatory system and boosts immunity, get moving. A minimum of 30-45 minutes of steady activity 3-5 times a week can help keep you healthy.
For more information contact Alan Phillips at (250) 491-4684 or e-mail: alan@stresslessspecialist.com.
