Effort = Results

After attending the fitness bootcamp at Flaman Fitness last week, I realized that my general fitness level has slid considerably downhill!  As I huffed and puffed at the back of the pack, I was feeling pretty disheartened. The infrequent exercise I had been doing was clearly not enough to keep me in the shape I thought I should be in!

As with fitness, when it comes to organizing if we let things slide and just make the minimum effort, the clutter soon takes over! If your level of organization is not as good as it once used to be, here are a few tips to help you get results:

  • Vision: First of all, have a clear idea of what organized looks like to you. Remember, if your vision of organized looks like a picture from Martha Stewart magazine then your level of effort will be much higher.
  • Benchmarks: Set targets to measure your progress. Take before photos or time yourself to see how long it takes to find something. Then, when you have finished organizing, you will have something to compare to.
  • Consistency: If you put consistent effort into organizing, even if it is just 15 minutes a day, you will see results. I guarantee it!
  • Get Help: When you find yourself making excuses or losing motivation, ask for help! I can always talk myself out of doing something but it is much more difficult to convince another person. Recruit a friend or enlist the help of a professional organizer.

Organizing Help now offers weekly organizing classes to help you get started or keep going with your organizing projects.  For more information or to reserve a seat, contact Linda at (250) 870-1670 or email info@organizinghelp.ca

Time Management Tips

A number of months ago I signed up to receive weekly time management tips from Author and Speaker Daren Wride. His insightful emails serve as a gentle reminder to pay attention to where my time goes. Below is one of these emails and if you would like to sign up for more weekly time management tips visit www.darenwride.com/tips.htm

I recently heard a time management teleclass from internet marketing expert Eben Pagan. Like other internet marketers, he operates in a fast paced world where the line between success and failure is often determined by focus and efficiency. He began by highlighting three habits to avoid in order to maximize your time:

  1. Distractions and interruptions. It takes up to 20 minutes to get back into the frame of mind you were before the interruption. And while we cannot eliminate every single interruption, we often have more control over phone calls and walk ins than we exercise. Set your boundaries and stick to them.
  2. Friction. This is defined emotional dissonance; the things which keep you from being fully present and focused. It may be something as simple as poor office equipment, or as complex as a struggling relationship. The key is to face these issues head on and deal with them to the best of our ability.
  3. Monkey Mind. Have you ever had a thought that set off a chain of other thoughts and before you know it several minutes are gone? This has the same effect as an interruption. The solution? To catch the trigger thought sooner, write down anything you need to remember, and then choose to get back on task immediately.

Next week I'll pass on a common characteristic Eben pointed out, which many people have, and which robs them of mulitple days each year.

Alan Phillips Clinical Counsellor of Confidential Counselling and Consulting Services brings us this Stress Tip of the Month on Using Humour to Reduce Stress:

Did you know humour is one of the most effective ways of defusing stress and other upsetting emotions? It's true! When we are stressed, we tend not think as clearly or rationally as when we are calm. Creating humorous distractions, like reading or telling a good joke that you think is especially funny during times of high stress, interrupts our physiological cycle of arousal and restores our sense of perspective along with our ability to think clearly. So when you are feeling uptight, remember a good laugh will give you a break from the situation and an opportunity to restore normal physiological functioning.
