Go Green!

With Earth Day coming on April 22, 2009, there is no better time to start your spring cleaning and reconsider how you can reduce your impact on the environment.

One Million Acts of Green is a grassroots initiative started by CBC and The Hour with George Stroumboulopoulos in partnership with Cisco. They want to mobilize Canadians to do One Million Acts of Green. The idea behind the campaign is that one small act can make a big difference.

It is not about overhauling your life, it is about one act from each individual amassing to a million. It can be as simple as switching to compact fluorescent lightbulbs, starting a recycling program, or walking to work. You can do one act or you can do all one million! It is up to you.

Go to green.cbc.ca and register your Acts of Green. Their green calculator will help you determine the impact of those acts on the environment.

OFFICE

Clear Your Paper Clutter

Thank you to everyone who came out to our Paper Shredding Event on Sunday. We had a great response and many even asked when the next event would be held!

If you would like to participate in our next paper shredding event, send me an e-mail and I will make the arrangements as soon as we have enough participants.

In the meantime, here are some guidelines for what paper to keep and what you can safely let go of:

Toss Every Month: ATM and bank-deposit slips, credit-card receipts, and sales receipts for minor purchases (after you've checked them against your monthly statements).

Toss After One Year: Monthly statements, phone and utility bills (personal use only).

Retain for Seven Years: Year-end statements from credit-card companies, phone and utility bills (for business expenses), receipts/statements for annual mortgage interest and property taxes, deductible business expenses, child-care bills, out-of-pocket medical costs, or any other tax-deductible expense.

Keep Indefinitely: Your annual tax returns, year-end summaries from financial-services companies, confirmation slips that list the purchase price of any investments you still own, home-improvement records, receipts for major purchases (if replacement cost exceeds the deductible on your insurance policy).
