Organizing Tools for Dad
With Father's Day fast approaching I wanted to find some gift ideas that would help our dad's get better organized (not that they aren't already....):
- If golf is Dad's game of choice, forgoe adding to his golf clutter and get him something to keep his golf equipment organized and safely stored. These golf organizers have room for 2 bags, shelving for shoes, and a bin for golf tees and balls so Dad is sure to have everything in place for a great game of golf.
If Dad's sporting intrests lie more along the cable or sattelite route, a handy place to keep remote controls could be an ideal gift. Dad won't have to search far to find the remote with these remote control organizers. Now you just have to help him remember to put them back!
If those don't work then maybe a book on organizing might do the trick. Don Aslett's book Clutter's Last Stand is sure to strike a chord. Written with humor and honesty, this book offers a lighthearted approach to getting organized.

The Dual Office
In my newsletter last month I asked you to submit your BIGGEST organizing challenge for a chance to win a FREE organizing consultation. Here is the winning question selected for this month's newsletter:
"My biggest organizing challenge is this: I have two offices, one at home and one at work. And I find it very difficult to keep things organized between the two. I try to do different things at each, but there is overlap and often confusion."
With more and more people working from home rather than communting to an office everyday, maintaining two offices is not uncommon. Here are some suggestions to help keep the confusion to a minimum:
- Determine which work activities will be performed in each office then set up your space specifically for those activities. For example, you might use your office at work for meetings, phone calls, quick e-mails and some standard paperwork while using your home office for writing, doing research or other activities that require more time or a quiet place to focus.
- In your home office, keep your personal papers separate from work items otherwise this can get muddled when you are trying to focus on one or the other.
- If you have two computers – one at home and one at work - use an online server for your files, calendar and e-mail system so you can access your electronic information from both offices.
- Computer files are more portable than paper files so scan any documents you think you might need to reference later rather than trying to move paper files back and forth.
There may still be some overlap that occurs in each office but clarifying the activities for each space will help streamline your work and achieve better focus.

Monkey Mind
Recently I was introduced to the concept of the "Monkey Mind" so I did a little research. Turns out that monkey mind comes from a Buddhist description of the mind of a person who is not in the present moment. The mind of such a person is said to be likened to a monkey that goes from tree to tree tasting a piece of fruit from each and then dropping it and moving on to the next tree.
As with many of us, our thought process runs in much the same way. We jump from thought to thought and project to project without really ever being in the present and fully experiencing everything we are doing at a given time.
Your patterns of thinking are an important part of your reality so if you can effectively manage your Monkey Mind, you can transform your day-to-day life. Here are some of the tips I found to help Silence the Chatter and Tame your Monkey Mind. |

Did you know that you have 60,000 or more thoughts per day?According to Zen Buddhist tradition, the untrained mind is like a cluttered room filled with wild, unruly, screaming monkeys running loose in your head. |
